Chelsea scores three past PSG in Club World Cup final
Chelsea finishes their campaign as the first-ever 32-team FIFA Club World Cup comes to an end. English Premier League side Chelsea defeated European champion PSG in a one-sided affair at MetLife Stadium. Enzo Maresca’s side scored three past the French giants to win their second FIFA Club World Cup. Cole Palmer stole the show with three goal contributions for the London-based club.
Battle between two European trophy winners
Both Chelsea and PSG won two out of the three European championships held every year. PSG defeated Inter Milan 5-0 in the UEFA Champions League final, and Chelsea won the UEFA Europa Conference League by beating Real Betis. This added a lot of momentum to both sides in their Club World Cup campaign.
Chelsea on the counter
PSG have been the best side in Europe this season. They dominated Real Madrid in the semi-final and were hoping to do the same against Chelsea. Enzo Maresca knew that his side wouldn’t get enough of the ball. He made a few changes to his usual tactics and decided to play on the counter. Chelsea’s game plan looked better right from the kick-off. The Blues were applying constant pressure on the midfield, and PSG players were unable to get into the final third easily.

Chelsea gave the first blow in the 22nd minute when Cole Palmer placed the ball past Donnarumma in PSG’s goal. Palmer coolly finished a counterattack down the right side for Chelsea. Malo Gusto, the former Lyon player, gave him the assist.
Eight minutes later, PSG were caught on the counter for the second time. The attack came from the same side. This time, Palmer received a long ball from Levi Colwill. Cole made the same run and scored a similar kind of goal to extend the lead. Chelsea were all over the European champions in the opening half hour.

The Blues gave a killer blow right towards the end of the half. Cole Palmer created the goal this time, and Joao Pedro slotted the ball past the keeper. Pedro joined the club around the knockout stages of the competition. The Brazilian made his debut against his former club, Fluminense. He netted a brace to book Chelsea’s place in the final. Joao Pedro netted his third goal in his second game. This is a bright sign for Chelsea, who are looking to offload most of their current players and trying to bring in talent from all across the world.
Frustrated PSG ends with 10 men
PSG were left frustrated after Chelsea stopped them from scoring a goal. Plenty of chances were created in the second half, but Robert Sanchez was equal to the task. There were a lot of breaks during the play in the second half. Just before the five-minute mark of normal time, PSG were reduced to 10 men. Joao Neves pulled Marc Cucurella’s hair and was shown a red card after VAR intervened in the accident. Chelsea hung on to their lead to defeat the treble winners from the 2024-25 season.
