India, a country steeped in the tradition of field hockey, is set to host the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup once again in December 2025, marking its fourth occasion as the host nation. Following previous successful editions in New Delhi (2013), Lucknow (2016), and Bhubaneswar (2021), this announcement by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) has ignited enthusiasm among hockey enthusiasts worldwide.
Scheduled to feature 24 teams for the first time in its history, the upcoming tournament promises to expand the competition and offer greater opportunities for young athletes globally. FIH president Tayyab Ikram emphasized the significance of this expansion, stating, “Giving more opportunities to play to a larger and more diverse number of national associations is one of the key pillars of our empowerment and engagement strategy.”
While the exact host city for 2025 is yet to be revealed, expectations are high for India to provide world-class venues and facilities, continuing its legacy of successfully hosting international hockey events. The recent tournament in Kuala Lumpur saw India reach the semi-finals, demonstrating its prowess on the global stage before finishing in fourth place overall.
Dilip Tirkey, president of Hockey India, expressed excitement about showcasing India’s rich hockey heritage and nurturing young talent. “This prestigious tournament highlights India’s growing importance in international hockey,” Tirkey affirmed, underlining India’s commitment to developing the sport.
India boasts an impressive record in the Men’s Junior World Cup, having secured victories in 2001 and 2016. The tournament’s history, dating back to 1979, reflects Germany’s dominance with seven titles, making them the team to beat in this prestigious competition.
As anticipation builds towards December 2025, the tournament promises to deliver excitement, skill, and fierce competition. With 24 teams vying for glory, the event will undoubtedly serve as a pivotal moment for both Indian and global hockey. As India prepares to welcome the world once again, the Junior World Cup stands as a testament to the country’s enduring passion and commitment to field hockey’s future.
