James Anderson, the red ball wizard of England cricket, played his last Test match yesterday. The legendary pacer ended with 704 Test wickets, ranking 3rd on the list of highest wicket-takers, just behind Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan

James Anderson: A Fascinating Career

James Anderson made his debut for England in the ODI format in 2002 against Australia. He showed good intent in his early days, which earned him a spot in the 2003 ODI World Cup squad, where he won his first Player of the Match award for his 4-wicket haul against Pakistan. Anderson earned his maiden Test call later that summer. James played his first Test match against Zimbabwe at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground and picked up a five-wicket haul in his debut game, registering his name on the Lord’s honours board.

Anderson remained in and out of the team because of injuries but was immediately considered when he regained his fitness. Anderson was selected for the 2010 T20 World Cup squad. Though he was never considered a specialist in this format, he made it to the squad but never played in the tournament, which England won.

In the home Test series against India, Anderson dismissed the great Sachin Tendulkar for the 8th time, equalling Muralitharan’s record for dismissing Sachin the most number of times. After England’s poor performance at the 2015 ODI World Cup, Jimmy decided to retire from the white ball format and focus solely on Test cricket. He ended up taking 269 wickets in 194 matches.

The G.O.A.T of Test Cricket

When Anderson decided to focus only on Test cricket, he started presenting new challenges to batters and became a nightmare for them His ability with the new red cherry was well-known, but his skill with the old ball for reverse swing posed even greater challenges. Anderson paired up well with his partner Stuart Broad, and together they formed one of the greatest bowling partnerships Test cricket has ever witnessed. In November 2020, the ICC nominated Jimmy for the Men’s Team of the Decade. In 2023, when selectors chose Anderson for the Ashes series, they faced a lot of backlash. A former England captain criticized the choice, calling it a “sentimental decision.” He finished the series with just 5 wickets in 5 matches.

Records and Milestones

During his 21-year-long career, Anderson achieved many records and milestones. The most important came in March 2024, when he dismissed Kuldeep Yadav and took his 700th Test wicket. He also holds the record for the most five-wicket hauls for England, achieving this feat 28 times. He is the only pacer to bowl 40,037 Test deliveries. He also holds the record for the most Test wickets for a pace bowler with 704. His teammate and partner Stuart Broad follow, with 604 wickets to his name.
