Manchester United ended their season by winning the FA Cup 2023-24 crown. The Red Devils won the final match against Manchester City at Wembley Stadium in London. This win takes Man United to 13 FA Cup titles.
Erik ten Hag’s men were the underdogs in this match. They had the worst finish ever in Premier League history, finishing eighth and missing out on European places. Manchester City, on the other hand, won the league on the last day and were the clear favorites to win the domestic cup. This was a repeat of the 2022-23 final, which Manchester City won, eventually securing the famous treble.
Ahead of the final match, there was much talk regarding Erik ten Hag’s future. The Dutchman was under a lot of pressure following a poor end to the season.
Manchester City played a strong team for this tie against their neighbors. Stefan Ortega was in goal for the defending champions. Josko Gvardiol, Nathan Ake, John Stones, and Kyle Walker made up the back four. Rodri and Mateo Kovacic sat in the midfield. Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden, and Bernardo Silva supported Erling Haaland in the attack.
Andre Onana was in goal for Manchester United. Diogo Dalot, Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka played in defense. Sofyan Amrabat and Kobbie Mainoo sat in front of the defense. Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, and Alejandro Garnacho were part of the attack.
Manchester United made a solid start to the match. They were tight at the back and did not give space to City players. Rashford and Garnacho’s pace was the key to United’s attack as they focused on hitting the opposition on the counter.
In the 30th minute, a long ball from the defense was not dealt with by Man City. Josko Gvardiol’s back pass went over the goalkeeper, and Garnacho scored into an empty net. The youngster has performed consistently, and his direct approach makes him a huge prospect for the future. Nine minutes later, another youngster, Kobbie Mainoo, scored a goal to double the lead for his side. The Red Devils were 2-0 up at the end of the first half.
Pep Guardiola made some changes by introducing Jeremy Doku. Man City gave their best to break down this resilient United defense. Doku scored a goal by beating Onana at the near post, his goal coming 10 minutes before the end of the match.
Manchester United were able to defend their lead, lifting their 13th FA Cup crown. This was their second cup win under the Dutch manager.
It was a fairy tale ending for a few players who are departing this summer. The likes of Varane, Amrabat, Eriksen, Martial, and a couple of other players will be leaving with a cup title to their names. This FA Cup win secures a place in next season’s UEFA Europa League for the Red Devils, a big positive for them ahead of the transfer window.
