Euro 2024 is up and running, with the competition reaching the second stage of group matches. 24 teams are competing for European glory in Germany. The hosts are part of Group A along with Hungary, Scotland, and Switzerland.
Germany have started their campaign on a high with two wins in their first two matches. They are currently leading the group with a perfect record. The three-time UEFA European Championship winners are one of the strongest contenders to win their fourth crown.
The hosts started the 2024 championship with a match against Scotland. The Allianz Arena in Munich hosted the opening match of the tournament. Germany’s coach, Julian Nagelsmann, has a mixture of youth and experience in his squad. Toni Kroos’ return was a big plus point for this German side.
It was a perfect start for the home team, as they thrashed the Scottish side 5-1. Germany had five different goal-scorers in the match. Florian Wirtz scored the first goal of the tournament. Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz also recorded their names on the scoresheet in the first half. Scotland were reduced to 10 men at the end of the half.
Borussia Dortmund teammates Niclas Fullkrug and Emre Can scored a goal each in the second half after coming off the bench in the second half. Antonio Rudiger was unlucky as he netted his own goal. In the end, the Germans took all three points.
Germany faced a tough Hungarian challenge in the second round. Julian Nagelsmann named an unchanged squad for this clash at the MHPArena in Stuttgart. Hungary started the match positively and created a few attacks in the opening minutes. However, Germany changed the momentum within a few minutes.
Jamal Musiala was on the score sheet for the hosts in the 22nd minute. He became the first player to score two goals in the UEFA Euro 2024. The home team was the better side throughout the match. Germany’s captain, Ilkay Gundogan, got on the scoresheet in the 67th minute. He scored his first goal of the tournament after creating one for Musiala earlier in the first half. The home team was able to defend their lead, and Manuel Neuer recorded his first clean sheet of the tournament. Gundogan won the Man of the Match award for creating and scoring a goal.
Nagelsmann’s side leads the group with six points ahead of Switzerland, who are on four points. Germany will face a resilient Swiss side at the Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt. This will be the toughest match for the host nation in Euro 2024.
Switzerland started their campaign with a 3-1 win over Hungary. Against Scotland, the Swiss side settled for a 1-1 draw. Now, the top two teams are set to face each other in the final group stage match. The Germans will aim to end the first round with a 100%-win record. Switzerland, on the other hand, will hope for an upset and an automatic qualification into the next round.
