Clinical India and a stellar performance from Jasprit Bumrah left Pakistan reeling at Nassau Stadium in New York yesterday. Touted as the tournament’s marquee match, the game did not disappoint, with India ultimately extending their T20 World Cup winning streak against Pakistan to 7-1.
After a rain delay, Pakistan won the toss and opted to field. India’s innings started disastrously with Virat Kohli falling for just 4 runs on his fifth delivery—his first failure against Pakistan in any World Cup, with his previous lowest being 16 runs in the 2023 World Cup. The next over saw skipper Rohit Sharma dismissed, leaving India in dire straits at 19/2.
The Nassau pitch, favoring bowlers, prompted Indian coach Rahul Dravid to employ a strategic move by promoting Axar Patel to number 4. Patel managed a steady 20 off 18 balls, stabilizing the innings alongside Rishabh Pant, who played a gutsy knock of 42 off 31 balls. However, after their efforts, the rest of the Indian batting lineup faltered, with no other player reaching double digits. India was bowled out for 119 with an over to spare.
On a pitch, where the average score is 103, 119 seemed defendable but challenging against the likes of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. Pakistan’s openers started confidently, reaching 25/0 in the 5th over. However, Bumrah struck, dismissing Babar with a top-notch delivery. Rizwan and Usman forged a slow partnership of 32 runs off 34 balls, but Rizwan’s cautious approach pressured the other batters.
Requiring 48 runs off 48 balls with eight wickets in hand, Pakistan appeared to be in control. Yet, the tide turned as Hardik Pandya dismissed Fakhar Zaman in the 13th over, followed by Bumrah bowling out Rizwan in the 15th. Axar Patel’s economical 16th over, conceding just 2 runs, shifted momentum firmly in India’s favor. Pakistan’s hopes dwindled after Bumrah’s penultimate over gave away just 3 runs and claimed Iftikhar’s wicket. India clinched victory by 6 runs, thanks to a brilliant display of bowling led by Jasprit Bumrah, who was deservedly named Man of the Match for his magnificent spell of 3 for 14
