In a thrilling encounter at the T20 World Cup, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh delivered standout performances, each claiming three wickets, as India triumphed over Afghanistan by 47 runs, preserving their unbeaten streak in the tournament. Suryakumar Yadav’s resilient 53 was pivotal in India’s innings, despite Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan and Fazalhaq Farooqi taking three wickets each, including the prized dismissals of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. India managed to post a challenging total of 181/8.
Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Indian captain Rohit Sharma faced a challenging pitch at Kensington Oval, which was expected to be more favorable for batters compared to the conditions encountered on Long Island. However, India faced early setbacks as Rohit fell to Farooqi in the third over. Rashid Khan then struck crucial blows, removing Rishabh Pant and Virat Kohli in quick succession.
Amidst the early chaos, Suryakumar Yadav emerged as a savior for India, playing a blistering knock of 53 off 28 balls. His partnership with Hardik Pandya, who contributed 32 off 24 balls, added 60 valuable runs, steering India to a competitive total. Rashid Khan, with figures of 3 for 26, and Fazalhaq Farooqi, who took 3 for 33, were the key bowlers for Afghanistan, effectively breaking through India’s top and middle order.
Arshdeep Singh narrowly missed a hat-trick when Fazalhaq Farooqi’s edge found a gap between the wicketkeeper and first slip, resulting in a boundary. However, India’s bowlers soon took command of the match. Jasprit Bumrah struck early, dismissing both of Afghanistan’s openers within his first two overs. The inclusion of an extra spinner, Kuldeep Yadav, proved to be a masterstroke, as he restricted Afghanistan’s scoring during the middle overs.
Afghanistan’s innings struggled to gain momentum, losing three wickets in the powerplay. The remaining collapse unfolded after the 10th over, with Bumrah and Arshdeep both securing three wickets. While Arshdeep conceded 36 runs, Bumrah’s economical spell saw him give away just seven runs in his four overs.
This victory awarded India 2 crucial points in Group 1 of the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup, reinforcing their dominance and setting a strong tone for their campaign.
