On November 7th, during the 2023 ODI World Cup at Wankhede Stadium, Australia crushed Afghanistan’s dreams of victory. Eight months later, Afghanistan finally exacted their revenge, triumphing over the world champions on cricket’s grandest stage.
On Sunday morning at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingston, St. Vincent, Australia won the toss and chose to field. Australian captain Mitchell Marsh made the unexpected decision to leave out their ace pacer Mitchell Starc in favor of Ashton Agar, despite Starc’s impressive recent form.
The Afghan team assessed the conditions astutely, with openers Rahmatullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran providing a solid start and protecting their wickets. Australia’s bowling attack, sorely missing Mitchell Starc, struggled to break through early. Both Gurbaz and Zadran reached their half-centuries by the 16th over, with Afghanistan’s first wicket falling at 118 runs. Gurbaz scored a robust 60 off 49 balls, and Zadran contributed 51 off 48 balls. However, Afghanistan’s innings lost momentum towards the end, adding only 29 runs in the last 4 overs to finish at 148.
Pat Cummins, coming off a hat-trick in the previous game, continued his remarkable form by claiming another hat-trick, dismissing Rashid Khan, Karim Janat, and Gulbadin Naib. This feat set a new record for consecutive hat-tricks in T20 World Cup matches.

Chasing a target of 149, Australia faced an unexpected setback. Their innings started poorly, with Travis Head dismissed for a duck on the third ball. Captain Mitchell Marsh also fell in the third over, reducing Australia to 16-2, both wickets claimed by Naveen-ul-Haq. Mohammad Nabi then removed David Warner in the sixth over, leaving Australia struggling at 33-3 after the powerplay.
Post-powerplay, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis attempted to stabilize the innings and were making steady progress until Gulbadin Naib shifted the momentum. Naib’s spell was game-changing, as he took four crucial wickets, including those of Maxwell, Stoinis, Tim David, and Pat Cummins. Despite Maxwell’s efforts to guide Australia to victory, he couldn’t turn the tide. Australia ultimately fell short by 21 runs.

Gulbadin Naib was named Man of the Match for his four-wicket haul, cementing this victory as one of Afghanistan’s greatest triumphs. With this result, Group 1 is now wide open for teams vying to qualify for the semi-finals. Team India has already secured their spot and is expected to retain the top position. The battle for the second spot will be intense among the remaining three teams. If both Afghanistan and Australia win their next matches, the team with the better net run rate will advance. However, if Australia fails to beat India and Afghanistan manages to defeat Bangladesh, Afghanistan will directly qualify for the semi-finals.
