Shubman’s first double ton puts India on top at Edgbaston
Shubman’s appointment as India’s red-ball captain came after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement. This decision was a shock to many, but Shubman has taken the responsibility well. His tenure started with a loss, but Gill was impressive with the bat.
The 25-year-old continued this form into the second test. He managed to score back-to-back centuries, and this time he converted his ton into a double ton. Gill broke several records, and this knock has put India in a commanding position at the end of day 2. Indian bowlers bowled superbly towards the end and left the hosts in a spot of bother.
India starts day 2 on the top
Jaddu and Gill ended their partnership on 99 at the end of day 1. These two continued their good run at the start of the second day. This partnership ended on 414 and contributed 203 runs towards the total. India were in a commanding position when Jaddu lost his wicket to a short ball by the bowler. The all-rounder lost his wicket on 89.
Washington Sundar justified his inclusion with a crucial 42-run knock. He battled against all the tactics used by the England ballers and the skipper. Gill and Sundar added 144 runs for the seventh wicket. Joe Root bowled a superb ball to Sundar, and India were reduced to 558 for the loss of seven wickets.
Gill was the next one to lose his wicket. England eventually stopped him on 269 runs. The Indian skipper scored 30 fours and three sixes in this crucial knock. India posted 587 runs on the board. Shoaib Bashir took three wickets on a track that is good for the spinners.
Shubman’s Record breaker
Shubman Gill’s knock of 269 was one of the biggest by any player on foreign soil. The youngster registered his name in the history books. He broke Virat Kohli’s record of most runs in an innings by an Indian test captain. He surpassed Virat’s score of 254 to register his name in the history books.

The score was also the highest by an Indian batter outside Asia. Gill became the third batter to score a double ton in England. Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid were the first ones to score a double ton. This score of 269 is the seventh highest by an Indian in a test.
Siraj & Akash Deep end India’s day on a high
India are without the services of Jasprit Bumrah for this match. This added pressure on the other bowlers but they were not backing off from any challenge. Akash Deep got the first two breakthroughs. Ben Duckett fell on a duck. Gill took a sharp catch at slips to dismiss the dangerous opener. Ollie Pope came and went on the next ball. He was caught behind the wicket by KL Rahul. England were 13 for two.
Mohammed Siraj bowled well, and his efforts paid off. Zak Crawley nicked the ball to first slip. Karun Nair caught the opening batter on 19. England ended the day on 77 for the loss of three wickets.
