Shreyas Iyer guides Punjab Kings to Victory in IPL 2025
Shreyas Iyer has led the Punjab Kings to a perfect start under Ricky Ponting’s guidance. They won their opening match of IPL 2025 against the Gujarat Titans. Shreyas Iyer continued his good form and helped his side to a big win. Both teams scored more than 200 runs in the match.
Shreyas Iyer and Team: Batting brilliance
The away team saw a huge rebuild in the auctions. Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh were the only retained players. The latter opened the innings with another exciting talent from Delhi: Priyansh Arya. Prabhsimran struggled to score and was out cheaply on five. Priyansh impressed everyone in his IPL debut. The left-hander scored 47 runs in just 23 balls to give Punjab a healthy start.

Shreyas Iyer was looking like a man in form. He replicated his Champions Trophy form in the opening match. Shreyas came one down and opened his account with a four. He then continued to build some partnerships with Arya, Omarzai, and Stoinis. Omarzai and Stoinis had a short stay at the crease. Both batsmen got into double figures but were unable to put a big score on the board.
Glenn Maxwell’s return to Punjab colours was not the one he would have wished for. The Aussie all-rounder was out on the very first ball of his innings. Punjab were 162 for five in 15.2 overs. Shashank joined his captain in the middle. Both players took charge of the opposition bowlers. Gujarat was lacking death bowlers in their team.
Shreyas and Shashank scored 81 runs in the last 28 balls of the innings. Iyer ended his innings on 97 of 42 balls, while Shashank scored 44 in just 16 balls. Shashank smashed 23 runs in the last over. He was unable to give Shreyas the strike, who was just three runs short of his 100. Punjab posted 243 runs for the loss of five wickets.
Titans take charge in massive chase
Gujarat Titans needed to score just over 12 runs per over. Sai Sudarshan and Shubman Gill scored 61 runs for the first wicket in the first six overs. Gill was the first batter to get dismissed. Buttler and Sai Sudarshan troubled the Punjab bowlers with the right and left combination. The partnership stood for 84 runs. Sudarshan was dismissed on 74 runs.
Death bowling masterclass leads Punjab to win
Punjab was in some trouble after Sudarshan and Buttler hammered them all over the park. Sudarshan’s wicket was a big positive, but the impact of Sub Sherfane Rutherford came with intent. He was hitting the ball cleanly.

The Kings made their substitution by bringing in Vyshak Vijay Kumar. The bowlers started to bowl yorkers and forced the batters to hit towards the off side. Gujarat batters struggled to hit the ball cleanly. In the end, they fell short by 11 runs. This change toward the end helped Punjab to defend this mammoth target. It was yet another thriller in IPL 2025. Punjab looked like a solid team and will be eyeing their first IPL title under the new leadership.
