Is Jasprit Bumrah the greatest fast bowler across formats?
The Indian national cricket team has produced some of the greatest players in the history of the sport. One such player who is known to all is the revolutionary fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah. The 30-year-old fast bowler has changed the Indian cricket completely since his arrival to the big stage. Jasprit Bumrah was born in a Sikh Punjabi family in Ahmedabad on 6 December 1993. He lost his father at a young age and was raised by his mother.

Early Career:
Anyone who is familiar with Bumrah knows that he has a very unique action. Lasith Malinga brought the famous slinging action and Bumrah has given another unique action to the mix. However, this action troubled him during his U-19 district trials in Gujarat in 2010. He was a part of the reserves and got limited opportunities.
The fast bowler went on to make his T20 debut in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in the 2012-13 season. Bumrah won the trophy in his debut season and delivered a match winning performance in the final against Punjab. He took three wickets for just 14 runs.

Jasprit Bumrah made his first-class debut against Vidarbha in October 2013. He took seven wickets in the match. In the 2015-16 Vijay Hazare Trophy, the umpires raised questions on Bumrah’s actions. The issue was resolved after a couple of matches. Bumrah led his side to another silverware after taking five-wickets in the final.

Jasprit Bumrah International Career:
The 30-year-old fast bowler got his maiden international call-up in January 2016 against Australia. He played the last match and took two wickets. Bumrah’s first wicket in national colours was Steven Smith. Following this match, Jasprit made his T20 debut for his nation. He delivered once again on his debut. Bumrah took 3 for 23, with first wicket coming in the form of David Warner.
The fast bowler made his test debut in January 2018 against South Africa in Cape Town. Bumrah struggled a bit with injuries. His unique action ruled him out for a few months due to a stress fracture. Bumrah recovered well and now has over 150 wickets with the red ball. This even includes 10 five-wicket hauls.
Jasprit Bumrah has played in two Cricket World Cups for India. In 2019, he took 18 wickets and was a part of the ‘Team of the Tournament.’ India lost in the semi-finals to New Zealand. The 2023 World Cup was heartbreaking. Bumrah took 20 wickets in the tournament that India lost in the finals.

Jasprit Bumrah played his first T20 World Cup in 2016. He took four wickets in the tournament. India lost in the semis to eventual winners, West Indies. Recently, Bumrah won his first T20I World Cup after a match-winning performance in the final against South Africa. Japrit took 15 minutes in the 2024 edition and ended India’s wait for an ICC trophy. Bumrah’s hard work paid off within a couple of years. In 2018, he was ranked as the No. 1 bowler in ODIs. Jasprit Bumrah’s T20 performances earned him a spot in ICC Men’s T20I Team of the Decade for 2011-2020.

IPL Career:
Jasprit Bumrah made his Indian Premier League debut in 2013. He has only represented Mumbai Indians and won five titles with them. The 30-year-old has played 133 games and has 165 wickets to his name. Mumbai Indians have retained Bumrah ahead of every auction and are likely to do so until Bumrah hangs his boots.

Personal Life:
Jasprit Bumrah married famous model and sports presenter Sanjana Ganesan in 2021. He met the former miss India finalist during IPL 2013. In September 2023, the couple was blessed with a baby boy.
