In a thrilling contest, South Africa emerged victorious, becoming the first team to secure a win in the Super 8s of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The match took place at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua, where the United States won the toss and chose to bowl first. This was South Africa’s debut on a batter-friendly pitch in the tournament, and they certainly made the most of it.
Led by stellar performances from Quinton de Kock (74) and Aiden Markram (46), South Africa posted an imposing 194/4 in their 20 overs. The co-hosts saw some effective bowling from Saurabh Netravalkar and Harmeet Singh, each claiming two wickets.
Both teams have showcased strong pace attacks throughout the tournament. Quinton de Kock opened with a blazing half-century, while captain Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen made significant contributions to reach a formidable total. De Kock’s 74 off 40 balls included seven boundaries and five sixes, complemented by Markram’s 46 off 32 deliveries in a crucial 110-run partnership. Klaasen remained unbeaten on 36, with Tristan Stubbs adding 20.
The USA’s fielding was exceptional. Corey Anderson caught a skier from Netravalkar to end Hendricks’ innings. Shayan Jahangir took a well-judged catch at cow corner to dismiss de Kock, and Ali Khan made a remarkable catch at deep point to remove Markram.
Chasing 195 for victory, the USA lost Steven Taylor early despite his quick start. The next four batters managed only 23 runs combined. Andries Gous, in excellent form, found a reliable partner in Harmeet Singh, and together they put on a remarkable 91-run stand. This left-hand, right-hand combination proved destructive. Harmeet’s dismissal in the 19th over was a critical blow to the co-hosts, but Gous’s impressive 80 off 47 balls against his country of origin will be remembered as one of the finest knocks in USA’s cricket history.
The USA finished at 176/6, falling just 18 runs short. Despite the loss, they demonstrated their capability to compete at this level. The match was ultimately decided with the ball, as five USA bowlers conceded 148 runs in 12 overs, unable to capitalize on the efforts of their teammates.
