Records broken SRH defeats MI
Records tumbled yesterday when Sunrisers hosted Mumbai Indians in the 8th match of IPL 2024.
After winning the toss MI skipper Pandya opted to bowl first. Much-awaited Travis Head made his debut for SRH while Kwena Maphaka replaced Luke Wood in MI.
Travis Head started from where he left off in the final of the ODI World Cup. He started smashing the MI bowlers all over the ground. After his partner, Mayank Agarwal got out early Abhishek Sharma joined the party and both southpaws scored freely and SRH scored 81 in the powerplay. Abhishek continued the show while Head was dismissed for a quick-fire 62. Abhishek scored 63 off 23 balls.

SRH were 161-3 after 11 overs Henrich Klassen and Aiden Markram took charge and took SRH to the highest-ever total of IPL by scoring 277 runs surpassing RCB’s record of 263 which they made against Pune in 2013. Klassen continuing his good form made a solid 80 off just 34 balls, Markram also played an impactful Inning of 42 off 28 balls.
Mumbai Indians were under a lot of pressure as the required rate was 14 from the start of the Innings but their openers Rohit and Ishan made them believe by giving them a fiery start scoring 50 in just 3 overs. Tilak Verma and Naman Dhir joined the party and at a point did make the chase look possible but after Naman was dismissed skipper Hardik Pandya came to bat and played against the run of play managing to score only 24 of 20 balls which created a lot of pressure on the other batters and MI only managed to score 245 and lost the match by 31 runs. SRH and MI jointly hit 38 sixes in this match which is a new record not just in IPL but in the entire history of T-20 cricket. Abhishek Sharma also created a new record by scoring the fastest fifty by any SRH batsman, he scored a 16-ball fifty which is also the second fastest of IPL after Pat Cummins who holds the record for fastest fifty of 14 balls.
Sunrisers will surely remember the night for the records and a great win. On the other side, MI has a lot to address before going to Wankhede for their first home game. Hardik Pandya who was booed by the Gujarat crowd got the same treatment in Hyderabad.
Now, questions are also being raised about his captaincy approach. In the 1st match, he came to bat at no. 7 and was not able to finish the game. In yesterday’s match, his decisions are in question on the way he used Jasprit Bumrah. When the Sunrisers were marching towards a big total Bumrah only bowled 1 over in the first 10 overs. He also made a calculation bunder by making Shams Mulani bowl the last over of the Inning even after having the liberty of 4 pacers on his side. Things surely don’t look good in MI’s dugout.
