In the heart of Catalonia lies Terrassa, a city that seamlessly blends tradition with modernity amidst the stunning backdrop of the Sant Llorenç Natural Park. With a population exceeding 216,000, this vibrant locale is not only steeped in history but also pulsates with the energy of progress and innovation.
Terrassa wears its historical landmarks like badges of honor, with structures like La Seu d’Egara and the Torre del Palau narrating tales of medieval grandeur. These architectural marvels stand as testaments to the city’s rich past, while remnants of industrialization symbolize its journey towards modernity.
However, it’s on the hockey field where Terrassa’s spirit truly shines. For over a century, the city has been synonymous with the sport, its roots deeply intertwined with the textile bourgeoisie of the early 20th century. Boasting four prestigious clubs and a remarkable tally of 100 medals, Terrassa proudly holds the title of the most Olympic city in the world, with 70 Olympic athletes hailing from its streets.
At the nucleus of this hockey fervor stands the Martí Colomer Municipal Hockey Stadium. Reconstructed for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, this venue stands as a beacon of Terrassa’s unwavering commitment to the sport. Named in homage to the 1992 gold medal-winning women’s Olympic hockey team, the stadium offers state-of-the-art facilities, including a meticulously maintained artificial grass field and seating for 1,300 spectators.
Among the esteemed clubs gracing the field is Linea 22 HC, whose men’s and women’s teams compete in the Honor Division B of the Spanish League. Additionally, the stadium serves as the proud home ground for the Royal Spanish Hockey Federation, further solidifying its status as a mecca for hockey excellence.
As anticipation mounts for the upcoming tournament, the Spanish captain, María López, reflects on the privilege of playing in front of the home crowd in Terrassa. “It’s always good news to play in Terrassa with the Spanish team,” she remarks. “The fans there know a lot about hockey and help us improve our performance. It’s an honor for us that the Hockey Nations Cup will be held in Spain this year. We are sure that the rest of the teams will be able to play a good tournament.”
With excitement building, Terrassa eagerly anticipates the arrival of teams from around the globe, poised to showcase their skill and passion on the hallowed grounds of the Martí Colomer stadium. As the city gears up to welcome players and spectators alike, the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup 2023–24 promises to be an unforgettable celebration of sport, culture, and camaraderie in the heart of Catalonia.
In Terrassa, tradition intertwines with hockey excellence, creating a tapestry of history, athleticism, and community spirit that captivates all who visit.
