India Celebrates Championship Victory: 17-Year Quest Complete
India triumphed in a nail-biting thriller to claim the trophy in Barbados after a 17-year wait. The game, filled with intense moments and shifting momentum, ultimately swung in India’s favor, again crowning them champions. Rohit Sharma joined the ranks of MS Dhoni, becoming the second Indian captain to lift the T20 World Cup, following Dhoni’s historic victory in the inaugural 2007 edition.
India Won the Toss
In Barbados, the Indian captain had the fortune of winning the toss and chose to bat first. Both teams remained unchanged and were geared up for the challenge. India’s innings began shakily with Rohit Sharma falling in the 2nd over, followed by Rishabh Pant departing for a duck. Suryakumar Yadav’s attempted hook shot resulted in a catch at square leg, leaving India in a precarious position.

However, the experienced Virat Kohli rose to the occasion, anchoring the innings with poise. He found a reliable partner in Axar Patel, and together they forged a crucial 72-run partnership for the 4th wicket before Axar was run out for a brisk 47 off 31 balls. Virat continued his stellar performance, propelling the score to 150 before being dismissed in the 19th over for 76. Shivam Dube added a valuable 27 off 16 balls, helping India reach a competitive total of 176 in their 20 overs. Keshav Maharaj and Anrich Nortje stood out for South Africa, each claiming two wickets.

Chasing a target of 176, South Africa got off to a rocky start, losing Hendricks and captain Markram by the 3rd over. Stubbs and De Kock then took charge, steadily building the innings and taking the score to 68-2 before Axar Patel dismissed Stubbs. De Kock followed in the 13th over after scoring a well-made 39. The onus then fell on finishers Klaasen and Miller.
With South Africa needing 68 runs from the last 7 overs, Klaasen accelerated the scoring by smashing 24 runs off Axar’s 15th over. With only 30 runs required from 30 balls, the chase seemed straightforward. However, the Indian bowlers had other plans. Hardik Pandya dismissed Klaasen in the 17th over, and Jasprit Bumrah bowled Jansen in the very next over, conceding just 2 runs. This shifted the pressure onto Miller, with South Africa needing 20 runs off the final 2 overs.

Arshdeep Singh bowled a tight 19th over, giving away just 4 runs, leaving Hardik with 16 runs to defend in the final over. Hardik began the 20th over with a full toss that Miller appeared to have timed for a six, but Suryakumar Yadav took a stunning catch at the boundary, dismissing Miller and sealing the game for India. India won by 7 runs, lifting the trophy for the first time since 2007. The Indian pacers were exceptional, sharing 7 wickets among them.
