Euro 2024 match between Switzerland and Hungary may not have seemed glamorous on paper, but it delivered an intriguing contest. Switzerland secured a 3-1 victory over Hungary, living up to the pre-match promise of an engaging encounter.
Hungary has been in excellent form over the last 18 months, earning a reputation as the ‘dark horses’ of the tournament. However, it was Switzerland’s coach Murat Yakın who made headlines before kick-off by starting Kwadwo Duah up front, leaving Breel Embolo and Noah Okafor on the bench. Despite this surprising lineup, Embolo still made a significant impact, but it was Duah who set Switzerland on the path to victory in Cologne.
The 27-year-old Duah had only earned his first cap for Switzerland 11 days earlier in a friendly against Estonia. However, he adapted quickly to the big stage, running onto Michel Aebischer’s through ball and calmly slotting past Péter Gulácsi with less than 12 minutes on the clock. A VAR intervention was needed to overturn an initial offside call, but the Swiss celebrations were undeterred.
Switzerland had already shown dominance in the opening exchanges before the goal. The build-up to Duah’s opener was impressive, consisting of 22 passes—the third-longest passing sequence leading to a goal at the Euros since records began in 1980.
With this 3-1 victory, Switzerland joins Germany at the top of Group A. Germany had opened the tournament the previous night with a commanding 5-1 win over Scotland. Switzerland’s goals from Duah and Aebischer gave them control of the match by halftime. Although Hungary managed to halve the deficit through Barnabas Varga, assisted by Dominik Szoboszlai, Switzerland held firm. Breel Embolo, returning from an injury-hit season, sealed the contest with a delightful chipped finish.
The game began with Duah scoring in just his second game for Switzerland. He shot low past goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi off a well-timed pass from Aebischer. Shortly before halftime, Aebischer extended the lead to 2-0, skillfully sidestepping Attila Fiola to create space on the edge of the box and curling a low shot past Gulacsi.
Hungary responded in the 66th minute with Varga’s diving header from Szoboszlai’s cross, which brought celebrations among the Hungarian fans, some of whom lit flares. Despite Hungary’s pressure and fervent attempts, Switzerland’s defense held strong, preventing further goals.
This match was Hungary’s first competitive loss since September 2022. Meanwhile, Switzerland, now second in Group A behind host nation Germany, demonstrated their prowess and resilience. As Switzerland continues their Euro 2024 campaign, they will be looking to build on this victory, while Hungary will aim to regroup and recover in their upcoming matches.
Switzerland’s performance was a mix of strategic excellence and individual brilliance, showcasing their readiness to compete at the highest level. With their eyes set on advancing further in the tournament, both teams’ future encounters promise to bring more excitement and drama to Euro 2024.
