Kevin De Bruyne Bows Out, The Derby Ends In Stalemate
Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester City’s creative enforcer, announced last week that he will leave the club at the end of the season. His decade in Manchester has delivered immense success—six league titles, a UEFA Champions League, and two FA Cups. The timing of his announcement, just days before the Manchester Derby, added extra emotion to an already high-stakes clash.

Manchester City travelled to Old Trafford to avenge their loss in the previous meeting. The Red Devils have been inconsistent under Ruben Amorim but have shown some positive signs in the last few matches. Manchester City, on the other hand, is playing one of their worst seasons under Pep Guardiola. Both teams needed three points to build momentum for the remaining season.
Kevin De Bruyne Anchors City Midfield in Haaland’s Absence
Manchester United has had a lot of injury concerns this season. Matthijs De Ligt was added to the list just one day before the game. However, Luke Shaw returned to the squad after a pretty long absence. Andre Onana started in goal. Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, and Mazraoui were the three central defenders. Dorgu and Dalot provided width on the flanks. Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro held the midfield. Rasmus Hojund led the attack. He was supported by Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes.
Erling Haaland was a big miss for Pep Guardiola. He had to make a few changes and went with an experienced squad. Ederson, Matt O’Riley, Josko Gvardiol, Ruben Dias, and Nunes were part of the defence. Mateo Kovacic, Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, and Kevin De Bruyne added experience to the middle. Phil Foden and Omar Marmoush were the two attackers.
End-to-end stuff but no goal
Pep Guardiola has failed to beat Ruben Amorim in the current season. First, he was defeated in the Champions League by Sporting CP. His second meeting was in the Manchester Derby. Amad Diallo scored the winner in that game. The Portuguese manager knew how to play against Pep’s tactics and his team showed signs of encouragement.
Early Fire, No Finish: Manchester Derby Ends in a Tactical Stalemate
Manchester United delivered a ball over the top in the opening minute. Ruben Dias was forced to bring down Alejandro Garnacho just outside the box and received a yellow card. This was the earliest yellow ever recorded in a Manchester Derby. The home team was looking better in terms of creating chances. They allowed City to keep more possession and were calculative in taking risks.

The game opened more in the second half. Phil Foden’s struggle continued, and he was substituted early in the second half. Rasmus Hojlund is another player struggling to find the back of the net. He was also benched in the 71st minute. The second half saw both keepers coming into action. Onana made a couple of decent saves. Ederson also made a good save on Zirkzee’s shot. Zirkzee and Mount added a bit of spark to the attack but were unable to score a goal.
Both teams failed to score and had to settle for a draw. Manchester United remains in 13th place, and Manchester City is 5th. They need to win most of their remaining matches to stay in Champions League places.
