Liverpool makes unexpected exit from 4th round of FA Cup
Liverpool suffered a shocking exit from the FA Cup as Plymouth Argyle knocked them out in the fourth round. Arne Slot and his men couldn’t overcome the Championship side’s challenge. Ryan Hardie’s second-half penalty sealed Plymouth’s place in the next round.
The slot starts the young brigade
Liverpool will play the Merseyside Derby this week. Arne Slot decided to rest some of his key players ahead of a busy schedule. Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota were the only regulars on the team. The slot changed the backline as well as the midfield of the team. Summer signing, Federico Chiesa got a rare chance in the team. Youngsters Trey Nyoni and James McConnell were also a part of the playing 11 for the Reds. Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones were the only experienced players on the bench.

Possession dominance but no real chance
The Reds knew that they were going to have plenty of the ball. Plymouth were dependent upon counterattacks against a side that pressed high. The first half saw no such real opportunities. Liverpool kept 79% of the possession but only managed to work the keeper on one occasion. Plymouth players were sturdy at the back. They even stopped the passing channels of Liverpool players. This led to very limited opportunities.
Liverpool: Game-changing moment
Plymouth’s tight defense left Liverpool frustrated. The Reds tried their best but were unable to trouble the opposition’s keeper. In the second half, Plymouth came up with a plan. Their long throws were enough to generate pressure on Liverpool’s young defense. In the 52nd minute, a flick on a long throw caught Harvey Elliott’s arm. The referee took no time and gave a penalty to the home team.

Ryan Hardie stepped up and sent Kelleher the wrong way. Plymouth were 1-0 up in the 53rd minute. Liverpool players showed more urgency but were unable to get past the opposition defenders. The home support was equivalent to the 12th man. That added more pressure on Slot’s team. Liverpool managed to hit the target three times. However, Conor Hazard was there to stop the ball from going in. Despite the numerous efforts by Liverpool players, there was no getting past Plymouth’s defense. The Reds were shown the exit door and Slot’s team had to face their first exit in the 2024-25 season.
Liverpool will look to bounce back after this poor display. The Reds are comfortably sitting at the top of the English Premier League table. They have also made it to the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League and the final of the Carabao Cup. The hunt for a quadruple might have ended but there is still a chance for three trophies for Liverpool. Arne Slot would like to take at least two in his first season in Merseyside.
As for Plymouth, this is a big morale victory for a team sitting at the bottom of the EFL Championship. They will look to carry this momentum and ensure their survival in the second division.
