Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands squad has surged into the UEFA Euro 2024 quarter-finals with a commanding 3-0 victory over Romania. This marks the first time since 2008 that the Dutch have reached the last eight of the tournament. The goals came courtesy of Cody Gakpo and Donyell Malen, securing the decisive win in Netherland vs Romania, Euro 2024.
Building on their quarter-final appearance in the FIFA World Cup 2022, the Dutch team now sets their sights on claiming their second European crown. Their journey to the knockout stage was anything but easy, having been placed in a formidable group alongside Austria, France, and Poland. Austria emerged as group winners, with France finishing second, while the Netherlands secured third place to advance. In their first knockout match, they faced Group E winners Romania, who had topped their group ahead of Belgium, Slovakia, and Ukraine, posing a significant challenge.

Koeman fielded a strong lineup featuring the experienced quartet of Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Ake, Stefan de Vrij, and Denzel Dumfries in defense. Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay spearheaded the attack, supported by Xavi Simons and Steven Bergwijn. Romania, playing their second Round of 16 games in Euros history, were determined to pull off an upset, but the Dutch proved too formidable.

The match commenced with Romania exerting relentless pressure on the Dutch players, aiming to disrupt their rhythm with aggressive pressing. However, displaying their superior quality, the Netherlands gradually took control of the game. The Dutch created several opportunities in the opening minutes, showcasing their attacking prowess. Cody Gakpo provided the breakthrough in the 20th minute, finishing off a well-crafted play initiated by Xavi Simons. This goal marked Gakpo’s third of the tournament.

Building on their first-half momentum, the Netherlands continued to dominate in the second half. Romania, desperate to claw back into the match, found themselves stifled by the Dutch defense. Virgil van Dijk came close to doubling the lead with a powerful header that grazed the crossbar. In the 64th minute, Gakpo found the net once again, but his goal was disallowed by VAR, leaving the Netherlands with a slender one-goal advantage. Despite the setback, the Dutch maintained their composure and control, demonstrating their experience and resilience.

Malen’s impact
Ronald Koeman had already made a change by replacing Bergwijn with Donyell Malen. Borussia Dortmund forward had a decent 2023-24 campaign in Germany. He was desperate to make a mark. Malen netted the second goal of the evening after Cody Gakpo made an incredible run to find his teammate around the six-yard box. The Netherlands were 2-0 up in the 83rd minute. Malen went on to score his second and third goal of the evening. This was the last kick of the evening in injury and stoppage time.

Onto the next stage
The Netherlands will now face Turkey who defeated Austria. Koeman’s side has already faced Austria in the group stage. The Dutch lost that game by a close margin. Turkey is a tough opponent in the next round.

Cody Gakpo and Xavi Simons are leading the Dutch attack. The Liverpool forward has four goal contributions. Simons has created three goals for Euro 2024. They will now look to add more goals and assist in the last eight games. The match will take place at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on 6th July 2024.
